| Podiatry is primarily concerned with treating problems
and injuries that occur due to foot function. The musculoskeletal
system has an optimum balanced position from which it works at its
best. If this balance is upset through poor foot alignment or function,
strain to joints and soft tissue may result. Poor foot function does
not only cause pain and problems in the foot but can affect the spine,
pelvis, knee, shins and various muscles in the lower part of the body
and legs. For people that frequently exercise, it is especially important
to have correct foot function.
A podiatrist may carry out a physical biomechanical assessment,
which looks at the way the bones, muscles, and associated structures
such as tendons are aligned and interact. If an abnormal or slightly
affected foot pattern is detected, orthoses may be used to help
realign the foot and lower limb to work in a more efficient manner.
