| Physiotherapy is a dynamic profession concerned
with human movement. We aim to restore balance, movement and function
within the body and facilitate the body's own natural healing responses.
This may be through treatment and/or rehabilitation as well as health
promotion and injury prevention.
We aim to provide you with a wealth of knowledge in the assessment
and diagnosis of musculoskeletal injuries/conditions and provide
patients with individually tailored treatment, rehabilitation and
advice based on the latest techniques.
What do we treat?
There are many injuries/conditions which can be treated effectively
with physiotherapy. The sooner an injury is treated, the quicker
it will heal, and the less likely it is to cause further problems.
Listed below are just some of the many conditions we may be able
to help with.
- Back pain & sciatica
- Neck pain & headaches
- Sports injuries
- Acute & chronic joint dysfunction/injury
- Tendon, ligament & muscle injuries
- Whiplash injury
- Arthritic conditions
- Overuse injuries
- Soft tissue trauma
- Rehabilitation following fractures & orthopaedic surgery
- Work related injuries
- Problems related to children's growth spurts
What does treatment involve?
Treatment will consist of analysing the cause of injury, as this
is very important both in preventing recurrence and providing relief
of symptoms. Advice will be given with regard to the amount of exercise
you should do until you are fit to return to full activity.
Treatment options may include but are not limited to:
- Manual Therapy: Manual Therapy techniques
are specialised hands-on skills consisting of joint mobilisations
and manipulations as well as soft-tissue techniques designed to
decrease pain, restore movement and improve function.
- Mechanical and Electrical Modalities:
Different modalities may be used for pain relief, muscle spasm,
inflammation, swelling and wound healing. These may include hot
and cold therapies, therapeutic ultrasound, TENS, interferential
therapy, acupuncture, laser and biofeedback.
- Exercise: This is usually a core component
of a physiotherapy treatment plan. An exercise program may consist
of stretching, strengthening and aerobic conditioning. The exercises
are progressed and customised according to each individual's condition
and the specific goals for recovery.
- Taping: May be used with acute or
chronic injuries to facilitate or protect joints and soft tissues
in order to promote recovery.
- Education: It is usual for patients
to be educated about their condition and given information and
strategies to assist in self-management and prevention of further
injury. This may include re-education of posture.
- Correction of Biomechanics: It is
important to look at the biomechanics of how the body is functioning
in order to fully treat the cause of an injury. Muscle imbalance
correction and core stability will be addressed.
What will happen at my appointment?
The first appointment will consist of a comprehensive examination
during which your chartered physiotherapist will collect important
information about you condition and other relevant health problems.
This will be followed by an appropriate physical examination to
determine a course of treatment. At the end of the assessment your
physiotherapist will explain the examination findings to you and
discuss the proposed treatment plan which will normally begin straight
away.
